New Puppy in Houston: Your First Week Checklist

Written by Shady, founder of Shady Waggers · · Houston

A new puppy fills your home with joy. It is also a lot of work fast. This simple checklist helps your first week go smooth.

Make a safe space

Pick one small, safe room or a crate. Puppies feel calm in a cozy spot. Keep cords, shoes, and small things out of reach.

Start a potty routine

Take your puppy out often. Try right after they wake up, eat, or play. Praise them a lot when they go outside. In the Houston heat, keep potty trips short and shady.

Set an eating schedule

Feed your puppy at the same times each day. This keeps their tummy happy and makes potty times easy to guess.

Keep them busy but not tired out

Puppies need play and rest. Short play, then a nap. Chew toys help their teeth and keep them happy.

Book your vet

Set up a first vet visit early. Ask about shots and heartworm meds. Houston has lots of mosquitoes, so this matters.

Get help with the busy hours

Puppies should not hold it for long. If you work, a midday visit helps a lot. We give your puppy a potty break, some play, and love while you are out. Ask us about puppy visits.
