Hurricane season in Houston runs from June to November. Most of us have lived through a few storms. Our dogs have not read the forecast. They just feel our stress. The best gift you can give your dog before a storm is a plan you made on a calm sunny day. Here is ours.
Keep one bag by the door with everything your dog needs for five days. Check it once a year at the start of June.
Storms are when dogs get lost. Doors blow open. Fences come down. Loud noise makes even calm dogs bolt.
Read the tag on the collar. Can you still read the phone number? Then call your microchip company and make sure the chip has your current number too. It takes ten minutes and it is the single best thing on this list.
If you ever need to leave, your dog leaves with you. Never leave a dog behind to ride out a storm alone.
Pick your spot now. A friend or family member outside the flood zone is best. If you would use a hotel, search for pet friendly ones along your route today, while the sun is out, and save the numbers in your phone.
Get a long walk in early, before the first rain bands arrive. A tired dog rests easier.
Fill water bowls and a few extra jugs. Set up a cozy spot in an inside room away from windows. If your dog uses a crate, that is often where they feel safest when the wind gets loud.
The first walk after a storm needs slow feet and open eyes. Standing water can hide sharp things and can carry stuff you do not want on paws or in bellies. Keep your dog out of floodwater, and wipe their paws when you get home.
Check your fence line before any yard time. Storms move boards and open gaps you cannot see from the porch.
We watch the forecast all season. When a storm is coming, we message every client early and move walks up so dogs are walked, fed, and settled before the weather turns. Simple plans, made early, are how everyone stays calm. That goes for people and for pups.
